Jake Dongyoung Shim

Praised as “outstanding” by The Strad for his “pure, large, highly nuanced sound,” he gained international recognition as the recipient of the Isang Yun Prize at the ISANGYUN International Competition, becoming the first finalist to perform Yun’s Violin Concerto (1992) in the finals. Having studied with Ida Kavafian, Pamela Frank, and Shmuel Ashkenasi at Curtis, and Catherine Cho and Itzhak Perlman at PMP, he currently studies with Mihaela Martin at the Kronberg Academy.

Jake won First Prize and the Bach Prize at the Stulberg International String Competition, and was a laureate of the J.S. Bach, Irving M. Klein, F. Kreisler, and Zhuhai Mozart international competitions. He also works with Sony Classical Records.

He has appeared as a soloist with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestea, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Sendai Philharmonic, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, and the Korea Chamber Orchestra.

An active chamber musician, Jake has appeared at festivals such as Marlboro, Verbier Festival Soloist Academy, and events organised by La Jolla Music Society and Chamber Music Society, working with Gidon Kremer and Steven Isserlis.
