Łukasz Chrzęszczyk
Pianist, chamber musician and teacher. He holds a doctoral degree in the arts (2018) and is an assistant professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, where he has been a member of the Department of Piano Chamber Music since 2014. He studied under Professor Piotr Paleczny (piano) and Professor Maja Nosowska (piano chamber music), and was awarded his doctorate in 2018 for a dissertation on the violin sonatas of Krzysztof Penderecki. He has served on the University’s Senate since 2024 and on its Council since 2025.
He won the Grand Prix, First Prize in the violin–piano duo category and every special prize at the 1st Ludwig van Beethoven International Chamber Music Competition in Lusławice (2015, with Marta Kowalczyk). His other distinctions include prizes at the Johannes Brahms International Chamber Music Competition in Gdańsk (2012) and the Kiejstut Bacewicz International Chamber Music Competition in Łódź (2013), the Stanisław Moniuszko Polish Music Competition in Rzeszów (2019) and the National Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition (2011). He has held scholarships from the Minister of Science and Higher Education and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, and is a laureate of the National Centre for Culture’s “Młoda Polska” (Young Poland) programme.
Since 2016 he has formed a duo with the violinist Jakub Jakowicz, with whom he has recorded, among others, an album of Sergei Prokofiev’s violin sonatas (Chopin University Press, 2021 — nominated for a Fryderyk Award in 2022 and awarded the Muzyczny Orzeł statuette in 2022) and Departures, devoted to twentieth-century Polish and Ukrainian chamber music (Chopin University Press, 2024 — nominated for a Fryderyk Award in 2025). He also performs with Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, Tomasz Strahl, Jakub Haufa, Roksana Kwaśnikowska and Maria Sławek, with the soprano Joanna Freszel (their joint album Śpiewnik polski, Orphée Classics 2019) and with the Silesian Quartet; among artists of the younger generation, he works with the cellist Antoni Wrona, with whom he will appear in the 2026/27 season in the Polish Music Stage series of the National Institute of Music and Dance at the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Poznań Philharmonic.
He appears at festivals including the International Chopin Festival in Duszniki-Zdrój, Trzy-Czte-Ry, Kwartesencja, Emanacje in Lusławice, the Karol Szymanowski Music Festival in Zakopane and the Waldorff Festival in Radziejowice. He collaborates with the National Institute of Music and Dance, among others in its Polish Music Stage and Polish Music on Stage series; as part of the latter, he performed with Joanna Freszel in the United States in 2023.
A special place in his work is reserved for the lesser-known Polish repertoire of the twentieth century. In 2020–2021, supported by the “Kultura w sieci” (Culture Online) scholarship and a creative grant from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, he carried out his own project Antologia mazurka (An Anthology of the Mazurka) — a recording of over seventy mazurkas by Polish composers, available on the artist’s social media channels.
