Biography

Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Poznań Philharmonic and Principal Guest Conductor of the Krakow Philharmonic, Łukasz Borowicz studied with Bogusław Madey at Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw where he also received a doctorate in conducting under Antoni Wit. Between 2007 and 2015, he was Artistic Director of the Polish Radio Orchestra, and in the years 2006-2011 – First Guest Conductor of the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra. He is holder of the Passport prize of “Polityka” magazine (2008), The Coryphaeus of Polish Music (2011), The Cyprian Kamil Norwid Prize (2013), The Tansman Prize (2014) for outstanding musical personality, as well as the Honorary Award of Polish Composers Union (2022), to name just a few.

In the 2026/27 season, Łukasz Borowicz debuts with the musicians of the NHK Symphony Orchestra and the Slovak State Philharmonic Košice, records with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra, makes his debut at the Centralny Plac Muzyki Festival in Warsaw, and returns for concerts and recordings with the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Prague Philharmonia, the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Zlín, as well as the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the ensembles of the Warsaw Philharmonic, the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic, the Wrocław Opera, the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic, and the Lublin Philharmonic.

As opera conductor, he debuted with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw, to date, he has led over 200 opera and ballet performances at the venue, incl. the premieres of Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck, The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky, Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn Bartholdy/Ligeti, Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev, and Polish Ballets. Has also conducted orchestras at premiere performances of Don Giovanni by Mozart, Eugène Onegin by Tchaikovsky, Moniuszko’s Halka and Szymanowski’s King Roger at the Cracow Opera, Die Zauberflöte by Mozart, Rusalka by Dvořak, Bluebeard’s Castle by Bartok and Dido and Aeneas by Purcell at the Grand Theatre in Łodź, as well as King Roger at ABAO Opera in Bilbao, and Don Giovanni by Mozart at the Polish Royal Opera. At subsequent editions of the Beethoven Festival, he has presented twenty forgotten operas. Has also conducted concerts at festivals in Pesaro (recital by Ewa Podleś), and Schleswig-Holstein (Halka with the NDR Radiophilharmonie Orchestra).

In 2018, he led the performance of Les Huguenots by Meyerbeer at the Opéra Bastille to become the first Polish conductor in the history of the Paris Opera. In 2019, he conducted the premiere performance of Halka (dir. Mariusz Treliński) with Piotr Beczała at the Theater an der Wien, and at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera (2020). In 2023, he led the premiere performance of the opera Dead End (Ślepy tor) by Krzysztof Meyer at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, and in 2026 – the stage version of The Polish Wedding (Polskie wesele) by Józef Beer at the Baltic Opera Festival.

Łukasz Borowicz has conducted numerous orchestras, incl. the Israel Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Akademie für Alte Musik, the RIAS Kammerchor, the WDR Sinfonieorchester, the SWR Sinfonieorchester, the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Luzerner Symfonieorchester, the Orquestra Titular del Teatro Real, the Basque National Orchestra, the Orquestra de Valencia, the Paris Opera Orchestra, the Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier Occitanie, the PKF – Prague Philharmonia, the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK, the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group and the majority of Polish symphonic ensembles.

Comprising over 150 albums, Łukasz Borowicz’s discography includes violin concertos by Grażyna Bacewicz (with Joanna Kurkowicz) for Chandos, complete symphonic works by Andrzej Panufnik recorded with the Polish Radio Orchestra and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, which was recognised in 2015 with ICMA Special Achievement Award (cpo), complete symphonic works by Grażyna Bacewicz with the WDR Sinfonieorchester (cpo) and Quo Vadis by Nowowiejski with the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra (cpo), which was awarded the ICMA in 2018 in the category of Choral Music. Samuel Hasselhorn’s album Urlicht recorded with the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra (harmonia mundi) was awarded two ICMA prizes in 2025 in the Vocal Music and Recording of the Year categories. His recordings have furthermore received four Diapason d’Or awards.
